AN ANCIENT GREEK BRONZE ILLYRIAN HELMET 550-450 BC (ED.24.028)

This bronze Illyrian helmet is expertly hammered into shape from a single sheet of bronze, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship achieved by ancient armourers. The smooth perimeter of the helmet is decorated with a series of carefully punched rectangular impressions, providing both visual refinement and a distinctive decorative element. Extending across the crown are two prominent raised ridges, skillfully hammered outward from the interior of the helmet to form a robust crest rail. This feature was designed to support the attachment of a plume or horsehair crest, enhancing both the helmet's functionality and the imposing appearance of its wearer on the battlefield.

Unknown, possibly Greece or further north. This helmet’s distinctive corrosion and patination provide insight into its possible discovery context. The corrosion and patination on the left side of the helmet suggest prolonged contact with soil or another material. By contrast, the right side exhibits remarkably little corrosion, indicating that it was not in contact with surrounding material and was instead exposed to open air in a highly stable environment. One plausible scenario is that the helmet was placed within an open-air tomb, and at some point fell over, causing the left side to remain in contact with the ground while the right side remained upright and unobstructed by soil or debris.
